No trip to Key West would be complete without a visit to the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum.
Although Mel Fisher and the museum were made famous by the fabulous treasure of the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society and Museum has much broader public interest. The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society is a 501 (c)(3) accredited, not-for-profit organization existing for the purpose of accumulating and disseminating information; providing educational services to the public on maritime and colonial activity in the New World and preserving maritime culture resources.
In addition to the collections form the famous 1622 Fleet that the Atocha was part of, the museum exhibits include the Henrietta Marie, an English merchant slave ship, the Last Slave Ships, the Key West Turtle Museum and more.
Mel Fisher’s legacy lives on with the Society’s involvement in education, archaeological research, and conservation.
